Vegan Sugar Donuts

There is a serious shortage of vegan donut options in our neighborhood. For awhile, we would curb our donut cravings until one day we had the bright idea to try making them ourselves. We purchased a donut cooking pan, and had all of the other ingredients we needed. Much to our delight and surprise, we discovered that making vegan sugar donuts is actually quite easy to do! And as long as you are open to them looking a bit different, they are versatile as well. Below is our classic recipe, however we typically cut the sugar in half and play around with "healthier" options.

  • 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup of sugar

  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup of plant-based milk (we prefer oat milk)

  • 4 tablespoons of melted vegan butter

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking powder and salt together.

  • Next add in the vanilla, milk and butter to the bowl. Mix well. The consistency should be similar to cake batter.

  • Coat your donut pan with coconut oil. Fill each space 3/4 full so there is space for the donuts to rise.

  • Bake at 350°F for 10-14 minutes, or until golden brown.

  • Let cool for a few minutes and then remove from the pan.

  • While cooling, prepare your topping. You may frost them or make traditional sugar donuts with melted butter and sugar.

  • If frosting, you can reference how to make vanilla frosting here . Otherwise, proceed below.

  • In two separate bowls: melt 1/4 cup of vegan butter and measure out 1/4 cup of sugar.

  • Take each donut and dip into the butter and then into the sugar. Top with sprinkles if you'd like (an absolute must with our children!).

  • Let set for a few minutes and serve!
