Zesty Matcha Latte

I used to be an avid coffee drinker, and did not know the beautiful experience of a zesty matcha latte. I would drink about two cups of coffee per day. It was my lifeline in juggling a demanding corporate healthcare leadership role with a newborn and a toddler at home. I loved the taste and extra burst it gave me. I did not, however, love the jittery feel and a fast heart beat I would get mid-morning. I chalked these symptoms up to my anxiety, and continued feeling this way for far too long.

When I transitioned from working full-time to staying at home with my two young children, I started actively working on managing my anxiety. One area I knew I needed to tackle was easing up on my caffeine intake. Fortunately by this point my youngest was in toddlerhood and sleeping slightly more regularly. I took the transition slowly and eventually moved from coffee to matcha exclusively.

I had enjoyed the occasional matcha before, in lieu of my second cup of coffee, so I was aware of how it positively impacted my body in comparison to coffee. But wow, I did not expect how energized I felt throughout the day. My body felt calm and settled evenly throughout the day. The rapid heart rate dissipated and the jitters lessened.

I slowly transitioned once more my caffeine consumption to green tea, and my jitters are completely gone. Yes, I don't have that caffeine surge, but quite frankly I enjoy feeling where my body actually is. On days when I need an extra boost, I will still drink matcha. On those days, this delicious recipe is my absolute go-to option. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder

  • 1/4 cup hot, previously boiled, water

  • 1 cup oat milk

  • 1 tablespoon of agave nectar

Steps:

Before we start, I will mention that if you plan on drinking matcha regularly we recommend investing in a bowl and whisk.

  • Scoop out the matcha powder into a small mixing bowl.

  • Sift matcha to remove all clumps.

  • Heat the milk over the stovetop.

  • Bring water to a boil.

  • Add the hot water to the bowl with matcha.

  • Whisk from side-to-side, not a circular motion, until clumps are removed and it looks smooth.

  • Pour the matcha mixture into a mug.

  • Add the cup of oat milk, or your preferred plant-based milk.

  • Stir in agave nectar until consistent throughout.
